Tens of thousands of people are fleeing their homes in the northeastern Indian state of Manipur as violence between different ethnic groups continues to escalate. According to local authorities, more than 60 people have been killed in the recent clashes, with many more injured. The current flare-up began when the ‘Tribal Solidarity March’ called by the All Tribal Student Union Manipur (ATSUM) in the Torbung area of Churachandpur district to protest the demand of non-tribal community called Meiteis for Scheduled Tribe (ST) status. The situation quickly escalated, with reports of arson attacks and looting spreading throughout the city. As the violence continued, thousands of people began to flee their homes, seeking safety in nearby towns and villages. Local authorities have struggled to contain the situation, with police and military forces struggling to restore order. The state government has issued a curfew in the affected areas, but many are concerned that it is not enough to stop the violence. The situation in Manipur has raised concerns across India, with many calling for the central government to take action to quell the violence. The state has a long history of ethnic tensions, with different groups fighting for control of land and resources. Many are worried that the current violence is a sign that these tensions are once again boiling over.
